Deacons need to be trained and equipped for ministry through a diaconate that is seen as the worshipping and serving core of the church. The koinonia of the diaconate through their prayer life, study, and learning together; and their commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ in the church and through their own lives will begin a process of renewal for the church. They will, in effect, become salt, light, and leaven for the church. With the effective employment of the gifts of the Spirit by the laity, a mainstream church can be renewed.  The methodology of this thesis was the use of literature, interviews with laity and clergy, the personal observations and experiences of the writer, and a statistical survey of the Association of Christian Therapists.
