One of the better opportunities for achieving spiritual growth is participation is the Cursillo (Via de Cristo) movement. The method of study included reading and analysis of congregational statistical data, personal interviews with Cursillo participants from the congregation both before and after attending a retreat, surveys of Cursillo participants and comparisons with similar congregations.  Results of the study indicated that those who attend Cursillo (or similar programs) are uplifted and renewed and are better able to avoid burnout in the congregation. The purpose of this project was to see if it could be possible to rebuild the infra-structure of this old inner-city church by establishing a network of relational groups.  Key elements are: the pastoral role, the link to the church, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the opening up to non-believers. By professing faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and through the public ritual of baptism, believers become citizens of God's rule and disciples of Christ with all the faithful.  From this understanding issues a corollary supposition that relationships are to be loving, forgiving, respectful, and non-manipulative, embodying Jesus' example.  The ministry challenge addressed in this thesis project is a congregation composed of closed, enmeshed, manipulative family and friend relationships resistant to the admission of newcomers. The methodology employed is an interplay between process theology and structured family systems theory. Intervention into the church family system relied upon the primary use of differing forms of paradox and not stating or identifying a diagnosis. The findings of this study revealed that strategies for change take place through a combination of factors. A cathedral model of base communities builds on existing expressions of the church's historical journey to suggest an ecclesial model suitable for urban Old First congregations.  A theological and ecclesiological base is developed for the church as a mediating community between society and new creation, using both cathedral and cell concepts to develop institutional structure.
