If seeking revival for our communities is our highest aim, then fostering racism is one of Satan's main strategies to frustrate our desires and efforts.I begin this work with an autobiographical first chapter. My guess is that most readers have their own story of racial prejudices in their childhood. How God transformed and redeemed these prejudices is the heart of this chapter.In chapter two I attempt to outline the biblical conviction that the universe is the playing field of the 'powers' both good and evil. I encourage the reader to take very seriously these unseen forces which influence people and institutions. Chapter three is a historical analysis of the Fulton Street Revival of 1857. I chose to write on this revival because it began in a Reformed Church in New York City.The fourth chapter is an overview of the historical roots of racism, and my effort to identify racism as a significant spiritual stronghold. In chapter five I invite the reader to consider the history of Kalamazoo from a spiritual power perspective. The last chapter is where I apply the learnings of the previous chapters to my interest in Kalamazoo. After establishing the need, it turns toward developing a concise theology of Jesus' ascension in the flesh, exploring the nature of the ascension event to the theological meaning of Jesus' triumph, and then the place of the ascension in securing a proper understanding of the person of Christ.  The implications of Jesus' ongoing incarnation are then explored. The leading thinkers, their lives, and the writings of Pietism are explored, and eight themes from Pietism are traced through the contemporary literature on church renewal as the keys to authenticate church renewal.  Throughout the project the author uses illustrations from his experience working for renewal in the United Church of Christ and the Ashburnham Community Church where he serves as pastor. Evangelism, church planting, and theological education are effectively transferring to Filipinos.  But spiritual formation and ministry skills need attention as second generation churches tend to stagnate.  Few missionaries minister to pastors after their formal training.  This research was done primarily through the case study of a local minister's fellowship which the author served as teacher and advisor for several years. The revitalization of a church is not revival or reformation. It is the biblically delineated and identified principles given to leaders to enable a church to move from its disabled and diseased status to one of vitality and health. This dissertation will point out the necessity of this ministry which will be clarified in the introduction of this paper. This dissertation has seven chapters. Chapter one explains why revitalization is necessary. Chapter two gives several key principles of church revitalization while chapter three gives a biblical paradigm for revitalization. The content of chapter four is a review of four contemporary books that have been written on the subject of revitalization. Chapter five highlights the 'Embers to a Flame' church revitalization conference materials and chapter six suggests several key roles that pastors and leadership can play in keeping their church vital and healthy. The author will lead the group in discovering important biblical truths, as well as certain characteristics of servanthood.  The group will then be encouraged to nurture the church and community by developing a committee known as SON (Serving Our Neighborhood).  The author accepted the call of pastor on January 10, 1999.  The congregation at First Baptist is composed mainly of retired people who have moved to the Broaddus area due to its proximity to Lake Sam Rayburn.  The people of First Baptist appear uncertain of their calling and specific ministry for the community. It is the aim of this project to offer a focus and an opportunity for the church members to realize their potential as servants and to discover their unique calling from God. The church will then transmit that calling into a ministry suited for the community.
