A case study model approach was used to gather data from three churches at least fifty years old that have undergone some form of revitalization. The leadership focus was twofold: first, inquiry was made on the kind of leadership structures or systems that the churches had in place, and second, consideration was given to the person of the senior leader: his strengths, weaknesses, and other personal traits.  Several conclusions were reached throughout this study, with the overarching research conclusion being that church contexts that are best positioned for revitalization are ones in which both the leader and the leadership system can be described as healthy or pursuing greater health. With the understanding that God is the ultimate source of spiritual renewal, this study focuses on what we can control: the environment of leadership within the church. The author introduced ways to stimulate communication within the congregation using the appreciative inquiry method in structuring surveys and questioners that guided the conversations of the congregation during workshops and trainings. In order to gauge whether there has been such a drift, the author of this thesis has decided to use the local church context of Memphis, TN, as a litmus test for the Western church at large, and has invited a group of churches representative of the diverse church context in Memphis to participate. The conclusion of this thesis reveals that there has indeed been a drift among many churches in Memphis from the biblical standard of discipleship. It measures the mission knowledge and application within specific context of Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio and also examines other research to assess if the results are reflective of the movement as a whole. The conclusion revels that Countryside YMCA has drifted from its mission. A qualitative research case study was conducted. The research concluded that pastors should be careful to listen to the heartbeat of their people. The pastor needs to become real as they live among their congregation. The author analyzes the effectiveness of allowing a congregation to strategically die so that a new congregation can emerge in its place. The method is referred to as a church restart. The author attempts to establish the theological basis for the church's existence and investigate the applicability to the local church of 'losing one's life to find it'. The author of this project has created a preaching/teaching response model based upon Acts 2:42 that has addresses the local church's declining health of 'making disciples.'
