During a six-month period, twenty-four lay leaders utilized Participatory Action Research by engaging in cycles of planning, action, and reflection. Findings from the project included characteristics of effective leadership, leadership expectations, and the importance of resolute action to achieve initiatives for revitalization. Together they demonstrate that when pastors and churches set themselves to preparing their hearts for renewing, God sends it. Coaching is about creating a supportive relationship that encourages intentional action, forward movement and improved and sustained performance. Three churches in the Portland/Vancouver area served as the focus for this experimental research project.
