The manual may be used profitably by a church session or governing board to explore the foundational issues of church transformation and to actively set in motion a process for such change. The manual is comprised of a series of practical learning sections that may be distributed for independent reading and then discussed in a variety of group settings by sessions or governing boards: regular meetings, retreats, devotions, and workshops. Most often this will happen at regular meetings of the session or board in the form of 'compressed learning' - i.e. intensive, 'on the run' or 'squeezed' learning that uses exercises and reading assignments that can be handed out and discussed as a group. The manual is organized as follows. The Introduction sets forth the reality facing many, perhaps even most, mainline or 'old line' congregations today -- the 'deep change or slow death dilemma.' It then introduces the manual's basic structure and educational approach. The body of the manual treats the following topics. Part one examines the relationship between leadership and congregational transformation. Part two explores issues relating to the congregation's readiness for transformation. Part three looks at the obstacles to congregational transformation and outlines an eight-stage change process, recognizing that the process of transformation is not often 'neat,' but in fact frequently 'messy.' This project considers one congregation's exercise in experiential learning, from within their context, that promoted the church's missional discernment and community life.  Nine congregational members joined with the outside researcher to form a community-based action research team. The author researched biblical and other historical revivals, as well as other revival literature.  He also surveyed his congregation and other pastors and ministry leaders to help determine his approach.  A theology of revival was derived from Scripture and a plan to stir a hunger for revival was developed from that theology.  The plan that was implemented focused primarily on the word of God and prayer. The congregation is multi-generational, traditional and yet open to change. This thesis challenges the preacher to consider what it means to preach purpose driven sermons. Further, it asks the question of whether or not the use of multimedia enhances the listener's sense of understanding God's purpose for their life. This project uses multiple feedback loops to demonstrate the congregation's awareness of its purpose and the impact the use of multimedia has in discerning its purpose and any growth therein. The author researched the scriptural, theological and patristical foundations for baptism and attempted a program which involved personal spiritual renewal through a rule of prayer, participation in the liturgical life of the church, Christian education and almsgiving ministries. Through comparative analysis, our journey was shown to be fruitful. The rite of Baptism is only the beginning.
