Biblical texts and images indicate that Christ's presence is the only requirement for an active and alive church. This project, which was aimed at helping members come to this understanding, was a four-part process.  These four groups of experiences were: eleven meetings with project associates that looked at the church, its context, biblical images of the church and development of a theological statement; three congregational experiences; development of a mission statement and goals; and implementation of these goals. Video recordings of faith stories in the local church were made.  This video composite was used as a springboard for encouraging participants to share their faith and begin the corporate story for the local church.  The project includes biblical and theological background for individual and corporate faith development. The congregation needed to address this issue and the issue of continuing fit of the congregation's vision and the pastor's vision of ministry. A study focused on the congregation's identity by utilizing the narrative of the congregation.  The format of the study was a series of six sessions involving elders and committed members of the church.  It was hypothesized that reflecting on the church's journey of faith in its history could cause the congregation to ponder positive attributes and in turn bolster the congregation's self-esteem, hope, and energy, and contribute to a more responsible and effective expression of the congregation's faith commitments. The research method was integrative-wholistic using an action-research model.  The hypothesis was proven correct. Its premise is God's intention that churches grow inwardly, if not numerically.  Purposes were to develop a methodology for renewal and growth in the target churches and establish stronger ministry roles for pastors.  The project, experienced by four churches, involved research of church and community data.  In a church retreat people studied the information, identified needs, established goals and action plans. Congregations received and approved the plans and pursued immediate goals for three months.
