The author compiled data to clarify the church's existing identity, led the church through an educational program, and conducted a leadership retreat aimed at formulating a comprehensive and operational mission statement.  The mission statement would be used to align existing ministries and develop new ones under the stated mission. The thesis was field-tested by two groups in two separate churches.  Each group followed the theological basis and the guidelines that were recommended for building and implementing a vision that was to lead to a new ministry within each church. A new ministry was born within each church.  The process and the experience of the process brought forth a positive and renewing effect upon the participants and spread beyond them. Maccia's Becoming a healthy church: 10 characteristics. Initial results, while not cataclysmic and overwhelming, indicate some promising signs of revitalization. The congregation adopts initiatives designed to strengthen worship, prayer, outreach, assimilation, congregational care, fellowship, serving, finance, missions, and clarity of mission and vision. The project demonstrates that a proactive strategy to renew a congregation can affect attitudes and perceptions of members positively, but improved rates of growth and assimilation are more difficult to attain and require great intentionality on the part of everyone involved.
