Prior to my arrival as Director of Music in July of 2006, worship was characterized by a strong sense of 'performance' of the spoken word and musical liturgy. As we welcome new members and continue to seek ways to live out our covenant to honor and celebrate people of all races, cultures, ages, abilities, sexual orientations and gender identities, our worship must also reflect this acknowledgment of diversity in our community, and must inform our shared experience of the divine in all of our lives. I used the phenomenological research method to document the living experience of ten members, proving that not every declining church is destined to die. This conclusion was confirmed by a careful study of revival history and of pertinent scripture passages.  This dissertation is written about revival from a Congregational perspective, focusing on individuals of Congregational persuasion who have been used as leaders in revival history and Congregational churches which have been impacted by the results of revival experiences. The project-thesis explores the presence of these characteristics in a Connecticut Congregational church.  A biblical and historical review establishes the characteristics' validity.  A literature review shows these characteristics' presence in historical Christian renewal movements.  To see if these characteristics are present in the ministry setting, a diagnostic tool is developed and administered to a sample of church leaders, identifying three leverage points.  Programs and system changes are designed and implemented to strengthen these areas.
