The study looked at three models being used by United Methodist churches for multi-site ministry: purchase and build, church merger, and existing space/rental. The study used semi-structured interviews with focus groups from three multi-site United Methodist churches. The study focused on the decision making process in becoming a multi-site church, the transitioning process from a single to multi-site church, the experience of being a multi-site church, and the relationship to the United Methodist hierarchy. The study found that most churches do not start with the intention of becoming a multi-site church, but are influenced by various factors, including some type of crisis, a strong evangelistic emphasis, or a powerful vision. Regarding the transition process, the study found that a sufficient amount of time and careful planning were necessary for success. Key factors were a realistic understanding of the difficulties, the importance of leadership, communication within the congregation and outside, effective advertising, and the use of missioners. The study found that there were struggles as well as benefits in the practice of multi-site ministry. Leadership and leadership development were important factors. Benefits included reaching different demographics and providing variety in worship and ministry styles. Struggles included relating to other churches of the same denomination, dealing with finances, and maintaining a sense of unity. Regarding the relationship with the hierarchy, the study found little information. Most churches experienced minimal help or contact with church officials except in cases of conflict with other churches. There was often misunderstanding with the multi-site model. Greater participation by district superintendents and bishops could be expected with the merger model. The study concluded that multi-site ministry is one effective way that United Methodist churches can expand their ministry and outreach."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131326267523072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:45:43.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:34:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:11:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b459d4c2-5fbd-453c-bbce-64f4fbc561bb","accessControl_ssim":["df1c70c9-cf35-41bb-a8d3-7475df23ef7e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Unlikely place: the story of Solid Rock United Methodist Church's amazing turn around from death to new life"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:34:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:20:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e2d134f5-9605-4838-be13-cee583dbf612"],"hasLease_ssim":["fd80b542-0d9e-4078-93e5-22049de96255"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen Hayner"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marty J Cauley"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth","Church membership","United Methodist Church","Church renewal--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Churches are struggling both to make a difference in their community and to reverse decline. Chapter three cites pertinent readings that impacted the author's understanding of the setting and the problems faced. Throughout the process, the practicum observed how this concept of family could effectively function to support the participants to build a close relationship with each other and to identify themselves as part of the whole church family in a small group setting. The project was conducted for four weeks from May 22 to June 12, 2005. Fifteen people recruited from the church. The class met every Sunday from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. during the period. In the class, the participants explored the meaning of being a healthy church family in light of biblical and Korean family models and established an intimate relationship with each other. They were also encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines as daily assignments. The practicum enabled participants to identify the church as their own spiritual family and perceive one another as their brothers and sisters in Christ. Their spiritual growth has influenced other members to recognize a new movement around the church. Indeed, the class successfully inspired them to live as faithful members of God's family."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720805743984640,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:11:49.140Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:35:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:51:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2f8f8b56-a418-4f35-b79d-4a54c9ee829e","accessControl_ssim":["aa631ae7-90cb-49c4-b7e3-d87089279de1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A case study for restarting the church viable to vital: Stillwater United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:35:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:31:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["da78120a-92a0-4e44-9363-5c03134b3657"],"hasLease_ssim":["9c48374e-f3b0-4869-adb1-a1a6a8873772"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Walker"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Duane A Anders"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was designed to consider the journey of the Riverdale Congregation from over 50 years of decline to a relocation and restart as Stillwater United Methodist Church.
