On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study.  Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring. The key ingredient in this was the sponsorship program. Each trainee signed a commitment to sponsor a new or inactive member. Kin-life is that quality of relationships within a group that is characterized by commonality, unity, harmony, and a shared interest in the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of others.  The project trained thirteen individuals called ministry leaders to strengthen kin-life in adult Sunday School classes. This report makes use of the theology of Karl Barth to discuss spiritual formation through prayer and service as a fulfillment of our covenant relationship before God.  The report also discusses the rationale for lay involvement in the local church. The methodology is feminist and therefore attempts to break free from traditional understandings of research. The focus of the research is on the women's experience of ministry and supervision and their understanding of spirituality and their vision of ministry with women.  The insights from this study include the effect of patriarchal structures on women, the lack of skills of critical analysis to identify patriarchal reality, the minimal support and nurture for feminists' spirituality, and the limited provision of opportunity to discuss theology from a feminist perspective.  Implications for field education are
