Since current materials were deficient about giving care to alcoholics and their families, one session about alcoholism and other materials were added to the training.  Alcoholism was defined as a multifaceted disease with physiological, psychological, sociological and spiritual components. In chapter one he describes the church, using both subjective and objective indicators ro renewal.  In chapter two he gives a theological foundation based on Jesus as servant.  In chapter three he presents a design for renewal that includes a sermon series, education class series, and a retreat.  Chapter four is an evaluation. Results were mixed.  To an extent the church developed a spirit of risk and a vision of community service. United Methodist clergy in the Mattoon district and lay persons in the Casey United Methodist Church were surveyed to determine the stress and satisfaction they experience.  The target groups apparently were coping well at the time the surveys were administered.  A stress management workshop was conducted for the participants.  Suggestions of ways to cope with stress were shared. It also reports the results of such a pilot program in a United Methodist church in Texas in 1987.  Gifts are identified as abilities, ordinary and extraordinary, which can contribute to the purpose of the church as it serves the reign of God.  Many varied resources for gifts clarification are identified and analyzed.  Ministries are defined as services which are rendered by all members of the church, lay and clergy, within and outside the church's gathered life.  The study outlines the efforts of a gifts discovery project in a local congregation.  The work of the planning team, an evaluation of their work, and an evaluation of the project are included.  The essential elements of a ministry of gifts discovery are identified. Research involves the gathering of local church history, social information, and demographics.  A study series on the nature of the church and its mission, developed and implemented by the pastor, is presented to a group of laity. At a retreat the laity give formation to the statement, which receives congregational adoption.  Questionnaires help analyze the laity's beliefs about the nature of the church and its mission.  Evaluations appraise the project's content and process and the leader's performance.
