The project became a reality in 1981.  It was designed to fulfill two goals: 1. to articulate my theological understanding of the relationship between the church's educational ministry and its pastoral ministry of faith development; 2. to develop a three year program of adult education rooted in that theological understanding. The method of study included: classes, readings, Christian education committee work and the parish life and ministry development process. Projections by Boston Redevelopment Authority are used to project a ministry of pastoral care in the year 2000 AD. The training program consisted of six sessions which made the counselors aware of the feelings of grief, and how they might effectively relate to persons in grief.  After training, seven of the ten persons trained were willing to be assigned to bereaved persons whom they contacted on a regular basis.  These contacts proved to be helpful to the bereaved persons over the six months to a year that they related to them. A brief and revealing history of the Operation Nightwatch program in Seattle, Washington and the personal experiences of the author as one 'acquainted with the night' are followed by an evaluation of this program as seen by those who have been or are currently involved as staff persons in Operation Nightwatch. This project report offers: a theological and developmental context for ministry with and by youth; a weekend training model for enabling peer ministry; short and long term evaluations of the model's effectiveness; and, finally, suggestions for expanding and improving the proffered model. A system for planning ministry was developed with twelve lay persons in a suburban Protestant congregation of 1,400 members.  This system included a parish vision and mission statement, a nine step planning guide for program groups and a method for program evaluation.
