A six session seminar was conducted with ten lay persons.  Outside reading and journal keeping were required.  Counseling techniques were taught relating to listening, grief, depression and spiritual crisis.  The participants were involved in one-on-one practice sessions. The project first presents a doctrine of church and ministry with special emphasis on the United Methodist Church.  It turns next to a description of the practicum which involved the use of especially designed instruments with four pastors and selected congregational representatives, in group and individual sessions. Several sources for clarifying the developmental issues of seminary students were discussed.  The primary developmental issues of Bethel seminarians were identified as: interpersonal relationships, personal and professional identity, human sexuality, and spiritual formation.  Spiritual formation was selected for additional evaluation.  A more effective response to this need was suggested in light of recent A.T.S. projects on spiritual formation and the developing theory of spiritual formation (e.g. Fowler and others).  A student personnel model for student development was used which incorporates three change strategies: instruction, consultation, and milieu management. The dissertation will analyze various philosophies of ministry which lead to producing imbalanced disciples of Christ, study the First Epistle of John for Biblical principles of balanced discipleship, observe historical precedents from the Reformed tradition, critique some present day discipleship approaches, summarize a survey of church and parachurch ministry leaders and finally, propose some solutions for the thesis question. Lay leaders undertook a two-year training program supervised by the author.  Five models were employed to guide the formation process.  In group sessions and practical experience lay leaders deepen their skill and self-awareness, increase awareness of God's call on them to partnership with clergy in faithful sustainable ministry within the church and community. This project began with the development of a curriculum that incorporated all of the events and teachings in Jesus' life. The participants engaged in daily personal study and weekly small group interaction over a 12-week period. They also agreed to lead another individual or group through the same study. Through pre-program, post=program, and final interviews, the participants reported cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral results. A leadership group will be enlisted and is to be comprised of fifteen persons: the five-member vocational staff of Morningview Baptist Church and two key lay leaders enlisted by each staff member from his/her field of ministry. The group will focus on the life and mission of Jesus in the gospels in order to determine the mission of the church. Careful study will then be given to the role of leadership in accomplishing that mission with the model of servant-leader given primary emphasis. The project will begin with an overview and pretest before focusing on Jesus' mission through his life and teaching. Assignments will be given from the scripture as well as supplemental sources.
