This project was an equipping model. The project director researched and developed materials to assist in the training of the selected participants. The equipping process included 1) providing a biblical rationale for grief and crisis care; 2) providing information and research regarding grief and crisis aftercare; and 3) training the group to minister to those who have experienced a failed adoption. A method for quickly and discreetly evaluating the theological world of family members is developed, worship elements corresponding to preferred theological world are defined, and guidelines for evaluation of the effectiveness of the resulting service are established. This approach was utilized by the author with 15 families having no formal church affiliation. Using a pro-active research method, members were surveyed and interviewed, resulting in a grief program which includes education, grief groups and systematic follow-up. It was discovered during the project that evangelism was a surprising benefit of the grief process. A number of personal interviews were conducted with people in the church who had been hospitalized or bereaved in the last year.  Each was asked how many church people other than pastoral staff or their own family visited them during their difficult time.  A Sunday school class was then offered to train laypeople in such visitation skills, accounting for a variety of situations. The hypotheses was that through appropriating tools and techniques from two secular theories - Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Therapy - people of hope, especially those who have lost a spouse of a number of years, could learn to live again, laugh again, and love again with the faith and hope that their separation is a temporary one, not a permanent one. The model was a blended pre-post Functional Change and Theological Appropriation of a Secular Theory approach.
