The research consisted of a qualitative study in which five families which include a mentally handicapped child were interviewed separately to explore their experiences with God and with local churches. An assessment of the needs of families in the Cedar Grove community of Shreveport was done, and based on the results, participants were trained to address those needs. The training occurred during seven ninety-minute sessions. The program involved the participants in teaching/training sessions, group discussions, and a neighborhood tour. At the completion of the project, the project director acquired an increased knowledge of inner-city families' needs. This project focuses upon the value of funeral sermons that integrate personal stories with biblical proclamation. Why this is important and how this can be done are both explored, along with practical suggestions for gathering stories through carefully facilitated family interaction and active listening. Surveys, interviews, observation and experience are utilized along with research regarding appropriate homiletic usage of these stories.
