This thesis proposes a vital part of the answer to this problem by presenting a biblical model of addiction and ministry to the addicted. The author points out the flaws in 12-step groups and provides an alternative which is biblical in its approach. This alternative is called Higher Ground, a local church-sponsored, Christ-centered support group for the addicted and the family.  The author presents a history of this ministry, shows how it implements biblical principles and evaluates the effectiveness of this ministry with statistics and case studies. The writer first researched Western models of marriage enrichment and gathered materials which were presented to an indigenous pilot group. This group tested and further developed materials which are culturally sensitive and suitable for use in Fiji.  The results of pre- and post-program evaluation instruments, administered to two marital and two control groups, indicated that the program positively affected the marriages of the participants. The research involved measuring three goals within families: time spent, frequency of faith activity, and attitudes regarding the spiritual condition of the home.  Following a six-week focus of preaching and teaching concerning domestic faith ritual usage, the ministry resulted in a positive increase in all goal areas.  Each of seven participating families demonstrated positive improvement in at least one of the three goals. Using case study methodology, the continuum of violence as an expression of anger/frustration versus violence as an instrument of control are examined. This evaluation should come from knowledge of South African culture, the view of marriage presented by Scripture, and the experiences of women within polygamous marriages.  The author's interviews with women reveal a great deal of pain and anger over being in such marriages. This project was designed to improve the relationship between parents and teenagers by improving their communication skills.  It was a six-week course and used a praxis approach to learning. Parents and teenagers participated together in the class. Based upon pretest and posttest scores, adults in this project achieved a greater degree of improvement in communication skills than the teenagers.
