Due to broken trust in the relationship, many married couples are unable or unwilling to fully utilize even skills they already have to strengthen their marriage. If broken marital trust was fully repaired, not only would marital trust levels rise, but so would commitment and forgiveness. Through pretest, posttest, and follow-up tests during a small group intervention study, the researcher determined that trust was increased in the majority of couples. The researcher analyzed three biblical leaders' developments while considering the effects on family system. To further develop a theory, relevant literature of leadership development and family systems was explored. A qualitative and quantitative, grounded theory study was conducted using surveys and interviews of church leaders participating in a retreat to develop personal vision and major role statements. Data was collected via surveys of both church leadership and single mothers to determine ministry effectiveness to these families. Focus groups of ministry leaders used the survey data to assess current local church ministry and determine areas of needed improvement. The thesis of this investigation is that pastoral care can be supportive and productive for families, especially during the experience of homelessness. The setting was an emergency shelter that was established for short-term service to women with children from infancy through adolescence.
