This project proposes that the church has to become a reconciler in the context of continued struggles and conflicts, recovering leadership in the community by showing a new image of the church that is pursuing reconciliation.  The project reflects on the past and present of Korean immigrant churches in southern California and discusses the need to change their role in the future. By interviewing a sample of 33 Vietnamese Christians, the project discovered that Vietnamese immigrants are often not devoted to their former religions. Crises, conviction that Christ is God, anticipation that God can meet one's felt needs, and parents' approval are important factors influencing conversion. Primary research tools included questionnaries and interviews. Survey results indicate that a high degree of racism in established American congregations (both black and white) sometimes hinders developing relationships.  Ingrained cultural perspectives are problematic. Some Haitians and some established American groups are making significant advances in learning from one another.
