It relates the journey of an established white congregation reaching out to its diverse neighbors with Christ's love and bringing them into its fellowship. It describes five phases during those 10 years, each with its respective challenges and breakthroughs. It argues that multiethnic congregations constitute the New Testament ecclesiological norm rather than those formed by the homogeneous unit principle because they more fully express the nature of the church and its reconciling gospel and have a missional advantage in bridging to Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim populations who have migrated into their communities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130923808325632,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:19.357Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:28:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:49:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"86e37a5f-0eb2-485b-acb7-62ef3aeaf4c1","accessControl_ssim":["90e99c33-bfd2-42b3-90f7-e7f4647a554b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Marriage and family therapy for Korean immigrant families in the US"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:28:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:06:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2219dd91-0145-419a-8c6f-d231f19f72f8"],"hasLease_ssim":["a540b888-6b5c-4b0e-a89b-d1947b30d929"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Joon-hyuk Lim"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Korean Americans","Family psychotherapy","Case studies","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["All couples have struggles in their marriage, and the difficulties of moving to a foreign country can exacerbate those struggles. This project is intentionally designed to help them re-construct own authentic theological narratives that are relevant to their suffering experiences through re-reading biblical suffering narratives in a small group setting so that they can attain sensitivity in their faith journey."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715065431064576,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:40:34.751Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:32:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a0447f03-cca7-4967-9864-bc476ed0e2a5","accessControl_ssim":["37fc6b4d-d1f9-49b8-b826-4fbe10e71f86"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A revitalization strategy for immigrant churches through missional discipleship: a case study at LA Grace Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:32:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:48:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["513076c6-8d52-4619-a4a5-fd094372e972"],"hasLease_ssim":["0ea07f64-61da-44dc-95e6-f8a7d4648c89"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Buck Seung Sung"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Hyong Kwan Choi"],"publisher_tesim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Mission of the church","Evangelistic work","Christian life","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["A revitalization strategy for immigrant churches through missional discipleship: a case study at Los Angeles Grace Church"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to train twenty-three selected church members to become better disciples of Christ with a missional vision, to have an actual experience in the mission field, and to gain a continued dedication to missional efforts in the local church. The project started with presentations of biblical and theological perspectives on preaching in relation to life situations and historical and sociological perspectives on Korean immigrants in parallel to biblical and other immigrants. The project continued with a survey conducted on a typical Korean immigrant congregation to reveal how sermons influence them and change their perception of what is going on in their lives. The project also included manuscripts of sermons delivered to the congregation during this process. The conclusion of the project was to display the value of sermons that seek to change lives as well as the importance of the faithfulness and humility of the preachers to the Word of God. The project was to establish the case that Korean preachers can deliver sermons that transform their people by connecting the timeless biblical truths with their contextualized, personal, ethnic, and cultural style."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717402156466176,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:17:43.226Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:05:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1b0aea5e-583b-4508-b857-f7c99ea0ab9c","accessControl_ssim":["c0c2fec5-63ea-4edd-a2fa-9c48eb283994"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Moving beyond the tension and conflict between the first and decond generation within the Chinese immigrant church in America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:05:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:55:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b8db38fc-a294-42f6-aa9a-846e95eb37e7"],"hasLease_ssim":["8dabfd1c-aada-4fba-9614-05c6a95c7405"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rodney Cooper"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Peter W Wang"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Intergenerational relations","Chinese Americans","Church work with immigrants"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["While the problem of second-generation ministry within the Chinese immigrant church in America is well-documented, most of the research up to this point has focused on cultural land leadership differences between Overseas Born Chinese (OBC) and American Born Chinese (ABC), which set off and exacerbate the conflict between the two sides. This thesis will introduce a new paradigm for understanding the issue by incorporating the dimensions of demographics and church organizational development. These factors determine in part the potential range of English Ministry development in the Chinese immigrant church. Solutions to mitigate tensions are based on the concept of formulating appropriate expectations that are specific to the church's developmental stage.
