For ten consecutive weeks, twelve participants from area churches met for two hours in a group facilitated by the author, in a format that included meditation and silent prayer, reading of Scripture, discussions of assigned readings and participation in various rituals.  Topics included boyhood stories, male mentors and friendships, faith and the soul, rage, anger and sadness, healing and celebration. The basic approach was inductive.  The method of studying men was through personal narrative, story and observation.  The family, the culture and the church affect the way men perceive themselves as males.  The most important influence are other men, especially fathers.  When these relationships are perceived as negative, men experience personal, sexual and spiritual fragmentation. Interviews, focus groups, and research into masculinity and its development from the scripture and other literature formed a basis from which to make recommendations for future ministry. A pilot study involving church board members was designed.  A spiritual formation inventory was administered to gain the subjects self-perceptions of their spiritual formation needs.  Based upon the inventory results, a series of educational exercises was developed and taught to the board members. The board members indicated in their postinstruction responses increased desire and intention to pursue systematic spiritual development. Biblically and sociologically, the male role is distinguished from the female role.  That distinction involves primary leadership responsibility.  In this project it was proposed to develop a Christian male's self-identity by developing his leadership potential through increasing his awareness of leadership responsibility, improving essential biblical qualities of leadership, and advancing understanding of leadership style or personality.  A group of twelve male subjects were led in twelve group and three individual sessions. This dissertation investigates the three main versions of the legend of the Holy Grail, Perceval, Perlesvaus and the Queste del Saint Graal, for their archetypal descriptions of the Warrior (Perceval), Magician (Merlin), Lover (Lancelot) and King (Arthur).  Modern examples are also given for these four archetypes--George S. Patton, Vincent van Gogh, C.S. Lewis and Dag Hammerskjold--as paradigms for the expression and spiritual possibilities for modern men. First, the author conducted a telephone survey of forty of two hundred men who responded to an earlier evangelistic proclamation. he then produced and presented four lessons on follow-up which were evaluated by seven members of the ministry team.
