With the exception of military chaplains, moral injury remains a concept generally unknown by clergy. This project explores current pastoral responses to moral injury in order to discern what constitutes effective pastoral care. The qualitative research method includes a preliminary survey and semi-structured interviews with local clergy in Hampton Roads, Virginia, which is home to military bases from every branch of the armed services and NATO. Findings yield insights about specific practices important to responding pastorally to moral injury: listening, building trust, staying the course, and creativity. Further, recommendations for education of local clergy include: learning about military culture; expanding knowledge of trauma, post-traumatic stress, and moral injury; creating groups to process work with moral injury; and the need for an explorer's attitude in pastoral care."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860327604420608,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:12.008Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2e76f735-88cf-4669-ad9b-871b74aef016","accessControl_ssim":["ab207c4e-845f-4e6f-aa83-1f70369837b6"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A program of training and a manual for religious lay leaders within the United States Marine Corps: a dissertation submitted to the facility in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a80736be-8213-4953-aaa6-9fc368ef0001"],"hasLease_ssim":["f039dab4-ab7d-4039-ad0b-f4ccb7586c10"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Paul E Irion"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The Program of Training and Training Manual included in Part II were composed without footnotes or references with the intent of enhancing its acceptance and use as a practical tool for ministry by Command and chaplains within the Marine Corps. The Program of Training and Training Manual are the results of personal faith and experience, academic research, professional consultation, and colleague cooperation and support. As such, the approach is unique in that nothing similar to this has been attempted, and materials and statistics within the military are either short on supply or simply not available. The method used, therefore, was based upon personal faith, commitment, experience, observation and reflection. To this added the theoretical, theological, and academic which gave shape to the Program of Training and Training Manual. A literature review was conducted that centered on the methods of preparation and delivery of sermons that would be beneficial to chaplains in the field. The study followed a qualitative research method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with six chaplains, analyzed in a constant comparative method. The research found that chaplains delivered their sermons extemporaneously, often without notes, and utilized oral methods of preparation grounded upon their own personal devotions and prayer. This study concludes that chaplains need to avail themselves of the techniques and practices of extemporaneous preaching without notes, to include an oral method of preparation in order to preach effectively in the field."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131376151429120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:46:30.745Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:36:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:21:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a9894617-5b14-496e-8c86-ca2d4b21be03","accessControl_ssim":["c2655163-b890-4995-9a1f-cf8a993ed2d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The unique lives of warrior wives: a study of how and why churches should support military spouses."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:36:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:02:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d018ee78-4321-4cdb-a9b9-c9a51aedca07"],"hasLease_ssim":["4ddca39b-8a5d-4a9d-ba76-f373b8e426f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Amy Oden"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Normally, an individual deals with a professional organization or a set of rules defined by their employer to provide guidelines for ethical decision-making. This is not the case for military chaplains, specifically Family Life Chaplains; they have multiple areas of influence that provide input when dealing with ethical dilemmas. Military chaplains are provided input from their ecclesiastical endorser; their religion; their scripture; military regulations; military memoranda; other military documents; professional organizations; federal, state, and other laws; and other areas. When confronted with an ethical decision, chaplains need to take into consideration all of these pieces of input, figure out a way to organize them in a hierarchical format, and then make an informed decision that is in the best interest of the person they are helping. This paper presents a five-step process and uses a graphical presentation based on the genogram to provide a visual representation of the decision making model. A key component of the model takes into consideration multiple 'informants' or ourtside influences that impact the individual's decision-making when confronted with an ethical dilemma and helps them organize the 'informants' into a logical, hierarchical format to assist in making a decision. The project uses four case studies to present the model including four genogram-graphics."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716964281614336,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:45.636Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:23:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:04:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"58d2ac46-15f3-429e-a9db-bfead2b77307","accessControl_ssim":["bea7815f-df37-4f76-b5de-b4089ebe2d7f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a training program to equip soldiers and families in the 151st chemical battalion for post-deployment reintegration"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:23:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:44:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d98af88d-31bb-421c-b48c-07cb65612ea5"],"hasLease_ssim":["36234147-dcac-4b51-b8cf-4adee6df8ee1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mike Edens"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Derek M Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["United States. Suicide is a major problem confronting every branch of the military. This study focuses on Airmen in the enlisted rank of E-4 to E-5. These Airmen are entering the ranks of the non-commissioned officer corps. Each participant was presented with a survey immediately before and after the safeTALK class to measure its effectiveness in making them more alert to the possibility of suicide, their confidence to ask directly about suicide, and connect those at risk with a keep safe connection. Sixty days after the class, another survey was sent by e-mail to examine the participant's retention of lessons learned in safeTALK and their willingness and ability to implement the steps for a successful intervention. Those who identified themselves as having personally experienced suicide through the attempted suicide or death of a loved one were asked to sit down for an interview with the author. Lessons learned from those who agreed to be interviewed were used to examine how their personal experience affected their motivation to help a person at risk and gauge safeTALK's effectiveness. SafeTALK was found to be effective in preparing Airmen to intervene when a fellow military member was having suicidal thoughts."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791124990520721408,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:05:00.933Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:50:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c568b640-9d0f-4651-992a-769c31c33214","accessControl_ssim":["60265c07-cbe5-4feb-844b-5eddb677dc7d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Integrating ROTC life and faith through Bible studies to increase the spiritual growth of cadets and midshipmen"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:50:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ccfaa339-65e3-4886-ac5e-d65fcf126eb5"],"hasLease_ssim":["3dd7d37b-4d34-4c68-8414-aa4d5135a701"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Andrew B Seidel"],"year_tesim":["2011"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David W Preston"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with military personnel","Church work with students","United States.
