Project"],"creator_tesim":["Miller, Edmund M."],"subject_tesim":["Ministry","Church work with nursing home patients","Church work with older people"],"abstract_tesim":["During the past thirty years, I have worked with elderly individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, senior centers, and group homes. (See Appendix K) The study of ministry with the frail elderly represents my continuing concern about the specific and unique needs of this group of individuals. The study is a pastoral essay about serious societal problems regarding the care of the frail elderly and a plea for church congregations to assist in solving the problems. The Ministry with the Frail Elderly (FEM) Study reflects concerns that are both prophetic and priestly. The study prophesies that the problems of ministry with the frail elderly are systemic in nature and that the magnitude of the problems will continue to grow. Relevant literature and demographics are used to convey the particulars of the problem. Secondly, this study suggests strategies and models for congregations to use to identify, nurture, and assist frail elderly…The purpose of the FEM study design is to describe the circumstances of ministry with the frail elderly by demographic statistics, by medical and health literature, and by interviews with pastors, health care staff, and the frail elderly themselves. Geographic limits are established for interviews to York County, Pennsylvania, the location of this researcher’s parish. The goal of Part I is to describe the complexity of the needs of the frail elderly; and secondly, to suggest strategies for a shared ministry. The theology underlying the study assumes a priesthood of believers who share their ministry of presence with the frail An older adult council was organized and trained to interview 148 older adults, finding them healthy, active, and affluent Christians claiming interesting, meaningful lives. The research begins with an examination of nature of retirement in the church and society and how that has brought about the 'rise and fall' of the theory of disengagement.  The remedy presented is for ministry with and for the aging to be grounded in the Christian view of aging.  Aging is then examined in Christian perspectives, through an examination of aging in the Bible, Christian theological tradition, and contemporary society.  Chapter 4 reports the act of ministry itself, a life-review process \u0026 ten class sessions to be used by a pastor to nurture \u0026 equip aging individuals \u0026 groups to remain engaged in the worship and work of the church. Chapter 5 is appraisal of the act based upon the responses of two persons who participated in the act of ministry, interpretation of data collected, \u0026 an appraisal in retrospect \u0026 prospect. This service can be coordinated with existing services, including referrals.  The Bethel Center Baptist Church developed such a program.  The people were asked what they needed and then the church developed the program. Most older people want to live in their own home as long as possible. Fifteen persons, 65 years of age or older, were enlisted in an eleven-week training session designed to equip them for ministry projects of their choosing, to undergird them in ministering through the selected ministry projects, and to guide them in evaluating the projects they selected.
