The residents and staff members who live and work in nursing homes too often find that nursing homes, as institutions, deepen their need instead of meeting it. Christian nursing homes, while not immune to institutional problems, can offer caring communities in which there is a profound integration of a reasonable accommodation to human need and the promise of reconciliation to human brokenness and alienation. Chapter 1 is to give background of the church where the project was conducted. Chapter 2 gives a biblical understanding for passing the faith from generation to generation. In chapter 3 the two age groups are explored in order to gain insight into characteristic traits, exploring strengths and weaknesses so that a harvest might be reaped. Chapter 4 shows the development of the project, the enlistment measures, training sessions and ministries developed. The project design consisted of interviews with pastors of older adults, a lecture-training series of encouragers to assist older adults with their transition, and feed back from encouragers and older adults about the transition ministry. Chapter 1 set the context for the ministry and how the project will be carried out. Chapter 2 established a sacred foundation for lay involvement in ministry. A case is made in chapter two using biblical, theological and historical arguments for the activity of the laity in ministry. Chapter 3 investigated the needs of the rapidly aging American population. A.H. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs was used to emphasize the person's needs. The chapter ends with a section of modern day churches who are ministering well in this area. Chapter 4 described the implementation of the project. A detailed discussion on the administering of group discussions is followed by a description of the course of study administered to the group. An evaluation of the project makes up chapter 5.
