This project interviews more than 100 pastors and elderly persons, pointing to urgent needs for ministry, and it also analyzes typical examples of ministry in New York and New Jersey. Based on historical, physiological, psychological, sociological, and biblical perspectives, the project reports and evaluates development of a ministry, including a regular seniors' fellowship meeting, a special series of five-lesson Bible studies, and related programs such as small groups for sharing and prayer, individual Bible reading lessons, visitation, counseling, social services, and activities. The project attempted to enhance the spiritual well-being and psychosocial integration of the elderly through two sets of biweekly meetings: one of life histories, personal experience, and issues of faith; and one of a supervisory nature as a peer support, sharing, and learning group. The project is theologically grounded on the church as body of Christ and people of God and continuing Christ's ministry as diakonia. Eight major retirement adjustment needs were identified and defined through the use of personal observation, research, and questionnaires.  The design of the program focused on the eight major retirement adjustment needs.  Surveys and a pretest-posttest indicated that the fourteen senior adults who participated in an eight-week training program showed an increased knowledge of these problems. Forerunner Ministries is one of the first in the nation to systematize a national ministry for older adults.  Research for this project was accomplished through surveys, interviews, and appropriate book and literature exploration. Research included the reading of a wide range of books and periodicals, gathering materials from a variety of institutions and agencies of and for the aging, taking seminary courses, writing research papers, visiting programs for the elderly and working with the elderly in a local church.
