The list of characteristics was derived from readings about the two ages, reflections on personal experiences, and interviews with older and younger persons. Primary is the need to increase the leader's understanding and awareness of the later years, to be more aware of program models, and to organize and evaluate programs.  Through the use of a survey research model 300 leaders with various experience levels completed a questionnaire testing this hypothesis.  The results are evaluated positively in terms of the response and through theological reflection. The results are verified through actual participation of senior adults, statistical measurement and personal observation. The data collected revealed that there is much going on in church and community directed toward ministry to the elderly but not enough concern being given to the ministry of the elderly.  This means a valuable resource of knowledge, wisdom, and energy is not being adequately used. The study not only collected data to support assumptions and project new learnings but designed and tested a process for helping individuals and churches do some planning directed toward involving elderly in ministry. Specifically, this chapter analyzes the theological reflections and its influences on the growth and nurture of the church. Chapter three identifies the historical significance of hospitals and nursing homes. Attention is also given to the nature and structure of hospitals and nursing homes. Chapter four addresses the selection of volunteers for training in hospital visitation. An analysis of the instruments used for preparation is included. Volunteer care givers help the elder in need with the daily tasks required to sustain independent living, tasks the elder can no longer perform on his or her own but who has no family or other care giver to help do.  Ongoing over site for the ministry will be the responsibility of the Parish Nurse Program (or other organization within the church if no parish nurse) who will provide administration, recruitment and training for volunteers.  Volunteers for this ministry will be recruited from among elders themselves who don't yet need assistance.
