These cases demonstrate that such persons, regardless of impairment, can grow through experience of God's love in trustful interpersonal relationships.  The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. The church's understanding of humanity that accords with the biblical Imago Dei realized in Jesus Christ provides the necessary corrective.  It is consistent with the church's mission to extend its fellowship to all people.  Historical research and personal observation point to the inadequacy of the institutional and human services approach.  The project includes church volunteers and persons with disabilities.
