This project will demonstrate how using a framework of strategies that has been developed and utilized by the educational system can be adapted to the worship setting creating an environment that has a significant impact on people who struggle with cognitive process issues and disorders. A survey was created and sent to all of the churches within the Lancaster Association of the United Church of Christ to see if these churches had developed a practice of radical hospitality for people with CPD and how they implement their practice. According to the results of this survey it was determined that these particular churches were struggling with the right strategies to develop their own practice of radical hospitality and as a result, people with CPD were not benefitting fully from what they were offering. Primary Purpose: That mildly to moderately retarded adults can show positive intellectual, emotional, and social growth in functioning in both individual and interpersonal relationships when participating in and completing the course of study. B. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group or retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. C. Secondary Purpose: That the pastor becomes the teacher of a group of retarded adults, produces, and tests the effectiveness of the material. In the early 1960’s, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist in Owings Mills, Maryland, began a social ministry with a group of retarded male adults at a nearby state institution, The Rosewood Center for the mentally handicapped [sic]. The program originally centered on a once-a-month visit to the institution with games, an occasional film, fellowship, and refreshments. The researcher designed a virtual community, 'Sawubona.' The participants discussed their interactions with the church. This dialogue identified perceived and real exclusions and discovered practical strategies that both the disabled and local churches can use to improve participation. Participants were interviewed before and after the project to gain insight into their experiences with participating in churches. To gain an understanding of the homebound, the project director researched and analyzed current methods of ministry to the homebound. Educational and homebound ministry professionals reviewed materials utilizing the development of the workshop sessions. The project director referenced the latest texts to explore methods and trends in caring for the homebound. In this project the project director explored the areas of visitation guidelines, effective communication, spiritual aspects, and maintenance of ties to the local church. The project enabled team members to locate and minister effectively to the homebound. Opportunities for role-playing gave team members enhanced ministry skills. The project methodology included PowerPoint presentations, role-plays, lectures, small group discussions, and handouts. According to the National Organization on Disability/Harris Surveys of Americans with Disabilities, 47% of Americans with disabilities attend religious services at least once per month, compared to 65% of those without disabilities. Most congregations work to be hospitable and welcoming but physical barriers are easier to remove than stereotypical attitudes. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights. The goal was to improve the quality of 'spiritual' life of the participants through a primary focus of 'spiritual painting' accompanied by prayer, meditation, and Bible story reading. Most of the participants suffered from either or both mental and physical disability. Even though normal communication and activity participation was somewhat limited, meaningful qualitative and quantitative assessments were obtained.
