The project director identified and enlisted student members who have displayed an affinity for leadership and who were members of DLBC to participate in training to lead a small group Bible study. The training focused on equipping students, who are given a lesson plan, to lead a group of their peers in studying Scriptures at an age-appropriate level of competence. Evaluation of the project director's growth and the effectiveness of the training occurred at the conclusion of the training event. Despite being in the middle of a college campus for over one hundred years, there is no organized ministry between Banner Elk Presbyterian Church and the students of Lees-McRae College.  Through a survey and conversations with students regarding their spiritual needs, Banner Elk Presbyterian Church set out to redefine its presence on the campus Lees-McRae College. Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations.  Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored.  Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. This project led students to develop an understanding of a theology of the cross along with its practical implications for their personal lives and for their own ministry opportunities. Since theology is itself a dialogical discipline, a small group of students was enlisted to study together a theology of the cross as well as how they could apply a cruciform theology throughout the Baptist Student Ministry. This project lasted for one semester and attempted to include all of the students that were involved in the Baptist Student Ministry Program. The majority of the work, however, was completed by a smaller, select group of students. A larger group of students were asked to evaluate the testimonies, devotional materials, and sermons prepared by the select group. The researcher created and administered a 100-statement survey as a pre- and post-test to 167 students enrolled in a summer program designed to produce growth in twenty different areas of their spiritual life and ministry effectiveness. The results were gathered, sorted, and evaluated by the researcher, indicating spiritual growth did take place during the nine weeks. Using the Wesley Foundation at UNC Chapel Hill and nearby University United Methodist Church, the author examined the history of campus ministry in this setting and researched the theology of mission and the United Methodist connection. It is a ministerial tool used to address the lack of Bible study curriculum for college and university students.  The theological framework is provided by validating the ecclesial nature of campus ministry, which is the context for the ministerial tool, and by examining the role of biblical narrative.  The linkage to story is done by examining some different contexts in which story plays a role.  This served to develop paradigms for the Bible studies. The project participants attended two six-hour training events. The first event concentrated on the role of mentoring and the second on acquiring a basic understanding of interpresonal relationship skills. The project director recruited Baptist leaders from churches in the Lamar and Lebanon Baptist Associations currently supporting the Baptist Student Union. He developed the teaching material, a fill-in-the-blank notebook, a pre-test/post-test, and a covenant response sheet. This project provides laymen with a short-term introduction to and training in ministry to commuter college students.  Lay volunteers from several churches served four hours one day a week for six weeks in six ministry activities on campus.  The project took place during the first six weeks of the school year on a commuter college campus comprised of three institutions with a total enrollment of 33,000 students.
