Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church. After surveying ministry needs and opportunities, church leaders presented their findings to the congregation. A leadership training manual was developed and seven students were trained to lead koinonia groups.  These same students also participated in a weekly koinonia group meeting.  The participants and a control group of seven other students responded to a pretest/posttest.  The tests indicated statistically significant improvement in leadership skills and Christian maturity. The chaplain asked fifty-two students to form nine counseling groups focusing on their interpersonal conflicts.  In six sessions they were trained to use an ethical model to resolve their conflicts. The result was that needs of the college students were discovered.
