The project finds that patients who attend more classes and a higher percentage of classes improve their Spiritual Assessment Scores (SAS), but a higher SAS does not lead to a shorter length of stay (LOS). Those who exhibit the greatest improvement in SAS do have a shorter LOS, primarily because they attend classes consistently. The project involved a six-session, twelve-hour educational seminar.  The seminar investigated a clinical definition of religion, the relationship between religion and culture, and religion's relationship with Axis I and Axis II DSM-IIIR diagnoses. It concluded by addressing psychiatric assessment skills in the area of religion. Exploratory research and theological correlation procedures were employed.  The project conceptualizes how liberation ministry can best serve the needs of the estranged person in this church.  The model for pastoral care in the institutional geriatric church represents theory building.
