The author formed a group and practiced a 'mindfulness spirituality practice model' as a spiritual discipline. It was a model for healing and caring for depressed Christians. The author selected six participants who were struggling with depression, and this small group met for eight weeks. The participants showed positive changes with respect to their depressed feelings and anxiety. Yet there are many participants who can no longer remember as they used to, due to the onset of Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia. The author argues that the Lord's Supper, when it is understood and practiced in line with the Reformed theology of John Calvin and John Williamson Nevin, can be a source of life to those whose memories have begun to decline. In group spiritual direction a group leader enables participants to provide spiritual guidance and care for one another. The project coaches group members in using cognitive therapy--a preferred treatment for depressed persons in which change is accomplished through adult learning--to address spiritual needs of the member whose difficulties are the focus of any given session. The project facilitates a model of adult learning, known as Transformative Learning, through practice of reflection.
