The practical aspects of this project began with a presentation of case histories. An analysis of these cases revealed that these patients' histories contained eight 'pain themes.'  The spiritual care checklists (an instrument) used as a counseling tool with the pain patients were compared with those used with a control group of medical/surgical patients. Through the use of a story hermeneutic, the project integrates the areas of biblical study and pastoral care by bringing into dialogue the cancer patient and the biblical story of Job.  When it is presented in a workshop format this dialogue can draw out and help persons deal with emotional and spiritual issues.
