Six case studies were done. The research showed that the interventions reduced or alleviated pain and deeply relaxed the patient in 100% of the patients studied. They assisted emotionally by reducing or alleviating fear, hurts, anxiety, and sadness. They aided the patients spiritually by enhancing or renewing their relationship with God and by helping them to deal with their disease. The author has written a Bible study with eight lessons for middle stage Alzheimer's residents in the special care unit at The Hermitage in Richmond, Virginia. The material will assist nurses in the recognition of and response to the spiritual concerns of patients. Chapter Two examined the theological and biblical dimensions of the spiritual care of patients.  Chapter Three presented a psychology of the spiritual care of the patient, focusing on the key role of the nurse. The emphasis was placed upon referral to the Department of Pastoral Care. Chapter Four described the process of assembling a Spiritual Care Notebook to serve as a resource for nurses and to be placed on each nursing unit at BHET.  The final chapter was an evaluation and conclusion of the project. It presents an experience of group spiritual direction. In group spiritual direction a small group comes together to share life's journey, and to understand more deeply the place God has in life. A homogeneous group of adult children of Alzheimers's victims met for six weeks. The focus of the sharing was based on the third week of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. The third week exercises draw the person's attention to the Passion of Christ. Being united with the suffering of Christ gave meaning to our own suffering with Alzheimer's Disease. Our parents were good people: why did they have to suffer so heinous a disease? The literature informing the dissertation project centered on the disease of Alzheimer's the scriptures prayed in the third week, and the question of suffering. The role of the caregiver is essential. Being aware of the needs of the patient is only part of the knowledge needed to live with Alzheimer's Disease; caregivers must be in touch with their own needs. The caregivers must be keenly aware of the importance of balance in their own lives in order to take proper care of the patient. The goal of the study was to find ways to assist patients with these life threatening diseases to move from places of anxiety and worry to places of peace, healing, and wholeness.  The researcher found that story was the common element in the interventions that were most effective fro these patients.
