Employing a literature review, archival research, oral histories, and a survey questionnaire, the project uncovered a history punctuated with tensions. United Baptist patients expect evangelical pastoral support; they are satisfied with their experience of HBHC. Neither individuals nor congregations will accept a fully ecumenical chaplaincy. The project recommends that HBHC be incorporated under a board that can secure funding under its own foundation. The project employed the Death Anxiety Scale (Nehrke modification) in a pretest and posttest format to measure changes in the level of fear and anxiety in these patients. Evaluation found that 75 percent of the patients experienced relief of fear and anxiety, while fear and anxiety increased in 19 percent.
