Films that were pastoral in theme were the primary focus of this research.  A document was completed which addressed the theological and practical considerations of utilizng media in church educational programs, as well as the impact of media upon US culture and churches.  The project then addressed the pastoral role the author fulfills within the Churches of Christ while functioning as a hospital chaplain.  The development of a 39-minute video directed towards enhancing laity's Christian response to the seriously ill was the final aspect of the project.  Resources were utilized to help focus upon script writing, patient interviews, and securing visual supplemental materials. After these components were completed, the editing process began, blending all of these components plus utilizing decision-making skills of the author's hospital experiences and the resource persons' editing expertise. The author served on the pastoral care staff of St John's Regional Medical Center while he developed the material in the project.  The project will be used as material for teaching an internship program for students interested in the work of a hospital chaplain.  The students will work in the hospital with the author.  Subjects considered in the project are: the hospital chaplain, the patient, the patient's family, and the medical staff. Ten centers were contacted, and after studying all their written material, interviews and on-site visits were conducted.  Four significant questions emerged and an analysis of the four factors was done. The recommendations by factor are stated.  Problems in operating a whole person health center seem insurmountable.  The majority of these centers are presently dealing with these factors. This study involved research into classic Jewish texts, findings in modern psychology and Protestant traditions, and the clinical experience of the author.  Jewish pastoral theology and care is based on sharing a cognitive empathy with the patient or mourner.  This is not restricted to clergy but is incumbent on every Jew.  The study also developed specific roles for the rabbi. The four phases of the project involved designing a program that met the discovered needs of the hospital, enlisting volunteer clergy, training volunteer clergy, and implementing the program utilizing trained volunteer clergy.  Demographic studies of the community and patient surveys determined the design of the program. Personal enlistment of ministers was done and a training program was designed to introduce the participants to basic pastoral care in the hospital setting. Worship services were videotaped and later played in homes of the sick.  The sick had fellowship with laity as they saw relatives and friends in the videotaped services.  They felt a part of the Body of Christ.  Laity fellowshipped in preparatory meetings prior to going into homes. The program was assessed as to its importance and effectiveness by patients/residents, staff, doctors and by three colleagues.  The developing and implementing phrase was an action research, while the exploring stage was a survey study based on questionnaires, interviews and opinionnaires.  Pastoral care was seen as an important, integral part of the overall healing team and its effectiveness was confirmed by all participants.
