This project provides an overview of hospital chaplaincy and studies its pastoral care role.  It examines specifics of varying hospital organizations, the chaplain's work and qualifications and the diversity of patients and illnesses encountered.  It considers the training and pastoral role of clergy and laity in various facets of hospital ministry.  The project concludes that effective hospital chaplaincy service is an essential Christian ministry. From a literary review of theodicy, the book of Job and crisis management, the author develops numerous hypotheses regarding ministry to critically ill parishioners.  He then surveys and interviews critically ill persons who are both members of selected 'mainline' churches and residents of the Lower Yakima Valley of Washington state. A theological understanding of life, death and ministry was developed from biblical and secular sources.  Divided into six sessions, the educational experience utilized group discussion, audio-visual presentations, simulations, and visitation. Templer's 'Death Anxiety Scale' and subjective self-reporting were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational experience.
