This thesis challenges dominant narratives that assume that queer folk either abandon religion or escape to urban centers. Drawing heavily from qualitative data obtained from surveying and interviewing 12 queer Christians with lived experience within rural contexts, this study reveals how faith is sustained, reimagined, and reinterpreted despite exclusion, spiritual trauma, and in many cases limited access to affirming communities. Integrating queer and liberation theology as well as sociological analysis of rural religious and social contexts, this project emphasizes lived experience as a source of theological wisdom. The respondents speak to enduring relationships with God, separating divine constancy with failure of the religious institution, and engaging in reinterpretations through a queer lens that is rooted in love, justice, grace, and Jesus’ message.\r\n\r\nThe findings shine a light on how rural dynamics, especially the heightened visibility, social policing, and the centralized role of the church as a community institution, increase both the risks of exclusion but also speak to the transformative power of affirmation. Even with varying relationships to organized religion, all respondents shared a sustained faith commitment and a desire to ethically engage scripture, which is shaped by resilience and a deep hope for transformation among the church. Stained-Glass Queer Folks argues that queer Christians in rural contexts are not to be sidelined in Christianity’s future but offer vital insights, which challenge exclusionary and harmful interpretations of faith and aim to reimagine the Christian community as a space of belonging, inclusion, grace, and accountability. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["3a276156-2030-4889-9d10-abbf4005e1aa"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["dani.patrick@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1862661147750039552,"timestamp":"2026-04-16T20:41:36.777Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d1d38bea-1dee-4705-baa4-68116457a454","accessControl_ssim":["97d1899f-4db4-4036-a3f6-7c05c7c832fa"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Hear our voices: pastoral care for the LGBTQ community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19baf683-9cf4-4e0a-8d54-5fab8f753976"],"hasLease_ssim":["ad25f15c-05b6-419f-ab1d-e74be941f416"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2018"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Seven clergypersons were interviewed, and nine clergypersons completed the clergy survey. Two of the nine surveys were from Spanish-speaking pastors and these surveys were translated into English. Forty-four LGBTQ lay people completed the lay survey. One of the lay surveys was from a Spanish-speaking individual and it was translated into English. A word analysis was performed on the interviews and the surveys to identify frequently used terms related to strategies of pastoral care. Are they unfairly singling out this group for ridicule, while other groups about whom they might have theological reservations are not being singled out? The findings of my research indicate that in the central PA region the pastors in the Black Missionary Baptist churches state they are not using language that makes those in the LGTBQ community feel isolated. However, the majority of those in the LGTBQ community stated that they have heard derogatory language from the pulpit that made them feel isolated. The pastors also stated that they would have no problem with those of the LGTBQ community joining the church; however, the pastors added that they wouldn’t be treated the same in regard to sickness, death, and certain celebratory moments in their lives. My research points to the need for a more loving way of speaking by the Black Missionary Baptist churches in relation to those in the LGTBQ community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860304016703488,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:49.513Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-05-06T20:44:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T20:48:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e336d66c-d374-4855-9de0-04ddc18825e4","accessControl_ssim":["664c0afe-55e2-4cf2-bf1d-582a4144f3ab"],"depositor_ssim":["lucindapisaacs@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["lucindapisaacs@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Pelican Singlet: A Memoir on Gender and Spirituality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-05-06T20:44:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-05-06T20:48:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["48d69101-e7d8-4dd4-a392-d834a7ec20c9"],"hasLease_ssim":["d7189a5c-f2ab-489c-baf7-b1a21153405b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
