The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative research project was to determine those factors which contributed to this chasm between youth and church and make recommendations to address the problem. Based on survey returns, barriers to youth participation were identified. The study made several recommendations: (1) involvement of youth in all areas of the church service, (2) education of youth in the areas of self-esteem and ethnic-cultural heritage, (3) relevant Bible study, (4) establishment of church youth councils, (5) inclusion of youth representatives on church boards and agencies, (6) regular conversation between church leaders and youth on contemporary issues related to adolescents, (7) establishment of regular weekly youth fellowship groups, and (8) establishment of spiritual mentoring programs linking youth and adults."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7d2ba5b6-aeec-459a-aaec-e1eed75d32f0"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134691884007424,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:39:12.874Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:43:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:29:58Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"df05638b-a9f8-47c1-99de-1bdedf793004","accessControl_ssim":["f21466f9-1f44-4f7d-8aab-4d7381781e01"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Empowering the adult and youth laity to reach unchurched inner-city African-American teens: through a contemporary outreach ministry called J.A.M. Many churches are closed systems when it comes to dealing with its young. These 'closed systems' focus on the youth of their parishioners but fail to venture out into the community to those that are trapped in poor communities or ghettos. There is a widening gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in all of society and particularly amongst middle and lower class blacks. How does a middle class black church in the inner-city reach out to lower class youth surrounding its church? How do we empower the laity of a congregation to effectively reach unchurched youth? These are the questions that I will explore in this professional project. The vehicle we will use to get from Hip Hop back to the 'saving station' in the church is a contemporary outreach ministry called JAM (Jesus and Me). My goals were to 1) provide a place where young people could be transformed and feel safe, 2) create small groups that would allow the students to share more intimately and experience growth along with accountability, and 3) equip volunteers, both adult and youth, to carry out ministry to unchurched youth in the inner city. As a result of this project lives were transformed, volunteers were empowered to become ministers, and a bridge was built from the church into the community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130339301654528,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:01.928Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:28:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:51:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"937a3894-c887-4b3f-8cc3-38fac019f135","accessControl_ssim":["559a2806-9bbd-4ab1-ac2d-cf48513e8581"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A biblical philosophy of youth ministry for the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:28:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:27:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5f29de6a-8bab-4282-87d8-3ef5558436e2"],"hasLease_ssim":["f01f8d62-eba8-4e37-b83a-45ea54034c71"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael L Laurence"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Identity (Psychology)","Church work with youth","Church work--Biblical teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper seeks to address the need for an overall philosophy for youth ministry. The first section explores a biblical theology of ministry. Focused on the principle of salvation by grace, the information will deal with how believers are saved and become holy, their relationship to the church and one another plus principles for carrying out the four tasks of ministry. Youth ministers have the incredible opportunity to become involved in the identity formation process at a crucial junction of human development. Understanding the process of identity formation is essential. This paper will also provide an overview of that process. The theology of ministry and theory of identity formation are the foundation of youth ministry. The third section will address the goal of youth ministry: the development of a truly Christian identity. In addition, this section will also present principles that are universally applicable to youth ministry. The author hopes that this paper will be a resource for all youth ministers, providing a philosophy that is universal enough to apply to any church ministry context but specific enough to provide a philosophy that is clear and applicable."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131688487616512,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:51:28.612Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:13:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7996a3c2-adcd-4978-9924-98c58f7bc783","accessControl_ssim":["ead9e913-341a-41ff-9196-27c8432369cc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An evaluation of the Pentecostal Holiness' Sunday School curriculum aimed at Generation X"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:13:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:42:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8ed1aed9-3a1f-42d3-9801-4f6af10d24af"],"hasLease_ssim":["8e8f4087-15b3-471d-924f-819b43a87520"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert J Choun"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Chitwood, Charles S."],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Sunday schools","Church work with youth","Generation X"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This applied research project will examine Generation X and their attitudes towards contemporary Sunday school literature. As a writer of the Pentecostal Holiness Sunday school curriculum aimed at Generation X, this writer wanted to develop a program evaluation of this material to determine if it is relevant to Generation Xers. The attitudes of both those within and without the church will be examined after they respond to a survey upon reading two Sunday school lessons. The assumption is that the material will not be as relevant to those outside of the church. The goal of this paper is to discover how to make Sunday school curriculum more interesting and relevant to the lives of Generation Xers. As the Baby Boomers are rapidly aging, it is important to learn how to disciple this particular generation. The message of the gospel must remain constant, but the way of reaching Generation X may prove to be vastly different from formerly successful methods. In some way, this study wants to contribute to helping learn how to reach this generation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130491550695424,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:27.124Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":6,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
