The scope of this research included full-time paid youth workers, senior pastors, and parent volunteers serving in ten local, protestant, evangelical churches in Columbia, South Carolina, and surrounding cities. Qualitative research procedures in the form of personal interviews were conducted with a total of thirty-six individuals using a set of predetermined, open-ended interview questions. First, a literature review of both Christian and secular sources on teen rebellion was conducted.  It showed that youth rebellion is a major problem in the church and that encouragers of rebellion include peer pressure, consumerism, and sexual pressure, while checks to rebellion include prayer, sound adult relationships, and truth.  Second, twelve interviews were conducted involving both parents and adult children who had rebelled and returned to the faith within the last ten years.  These interviews sought to identify contributions to rebellion in the lives of some MBC youth and checks to rebellion. With respect to warning signs, teen withdrawal and the existence of two (or more) worlds for youth were identified.  Regarding encouragements to rebellion, peer pressure, culture, parenting issues, indifference toward God, and a self-centered worldview emerged as important themes.  Unique data included ignorance of cultural influences, by both parents and youth, and teen personality issues.  Regarding checks to departure from the faith, prayer was very significant.  Other themes included parental and/or adult support and the direct intervention of God.  This project confirms that teen rebellion within the church is a serious matter. The variables measured were: recall, communication, attention, stimulation of thought and emotion, persuasion, and enjoyment.  Groups of students saw either a multimedia presentation or a slide presentation and were compared to a control group, which saw no visual elements.  The multimedia group outperformed the control group, while the slide group performed oppositely. This paper will take a look at today's urban youth culture and at why it is so important to reach them with the gospel while they are young.  The author will present a theological framework for urban youth ministry, providing a biblical basis for a culturally relevant ministry to kids.  This project will also examine ingredients for an effective urban youth ministry by utilizing a 'hexagoning' research process based on systems thinking. These sermons are designed for use during an outreach camp setting. The author reviewed the state of adolescent culture and wrote a theological case for proclamation and incarnational ministry. A basic framework for evangelistic message sequences is offered and a message sequence along with seven manuscripts were written. In August 2004, these sermons were presented during four camp settings. They were revised and presented again in April 2006 and August 2006 during three camp settings.
