The author claims that Millennials (born between 1982-2000) are the most postmodern generation to date. The second body of literature deals exclusively with postmodernity and its relationship specifically with white-upper-middle-class youth ministry in the United States. A comprehensive process for working with leaders was developed and implemented over a four-year time period. A specific portion of the process was tested using a written questionnaire and verbal interviews, which were used to assess the way volunteers perceived their own spirituality and leadership before and after four weeks of meetings and interaction with the volunteers. These informal meetings focused on providing space for intentionality in the spiritual life of the leader and encouraged the practice of spiritual exercises. The thesis of the project is that implementing a spiritual formation process of leadership development is a necessary shift in pedagogy for training local church volunteer youth leaders to most effectively lead ministries to youth and young adults with an emerging postmodern world view which values authentic spirituality over other qualities and skill sets of leadership. Chapter 1 introduces the process and provides the methodology and parameters of the research project. Chapter 2 gives an overview of the challenge of postmodernism to church leadership, the need for pedagogical change, and the historical context of spirituality and spiritual formation in both youth and leadership, as well as a theological foundation for leading such a change in a denomination. Chapter 3 summarizes and interprets the general findings while Chapter 4 provides recommendations for further study. Included in the paper is an outline of the overall process put in place as well as the specific sessions used with the youth leaders and a description of the spiritual exercises and practices presented for the use of the participants during the data collection."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132032157351936,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:56.361Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:24:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:29:39Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39637292-d28b-4dcc-88f0-ed7b91f021f1","accessControl_ssim":["a8275689-1f6c-457b-8cf4-8a6adc1ae932"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preparing thinking Christians to survive and thrive in a culture of choice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:24:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:47:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["cc7292dd-3482-4042-aca4-31649742438c"],"hasLease_ssim":["6b1690aa-2803-4d62-bcb7-08a7ac855b0b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"advisor_tesim":["Joel P Okamoto"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Scott G Sommerfeld"],"publisher_tesim":["Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Youth","Postmodernism","Church work with youth","Decision making","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Youth are ill-prepared to think and live as Christians in our post-modern world, A retreat for high school seniors and graduates is one way of preparing youth to survive and thrive in a culture of choice, where perhaps the greatest challenge regards rationality for choosing ones religion. The specific emphasis was on the education of African American youth. The method of reach and study included: 1. Reading from various sources to gain thoughts, material, and ideas for a sermon series to be preached on the church's role in educating children. 2. Forming a focus group of four to eight members of Metropolitan, consisting of public school teachers as well as Christian educators and lay members. The group discussed the impact of the sermons and shared observations. 3. I preached a series of messages on educating children and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. This series led up to our 2006 Vacation Bible School. I utilized different preaching genres (i.e. expository, narrative/didactive, and topical). The author reviewed a comparison of volunteers from 2005 and 2006. New volunteers were surveyed to see if the messages had any bearing on their motivation for working with the schools. An exit discussion was held with the focus group which aided in the assessment of the project. Suggested materials and insights from other preachers who utilized motivational models in their ministries to galvanize volunteers to be instrumental in the lives of youth were also used. As a result of the author's efforts, sermons and a host of other objectives and energies within the church, the congregation recognized the need for volunteers. In the conclusion of the matter, a myriad of activities and motivations influenced volunteerism. While one should never underestimate the power of the pulpit and the preaching moment, especially in the African American religious experience, preaching is only one facet of the faith strategy. Other methods of motivation and vision-casting, working in concert with proclamation, are effective means of facilitating social awareness and ministry involvement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["795851c5-e081-4353-9c00-2c554dd1d015"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134940480405504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:43:09.954Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":248,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
