Youth ministry theologians have recently begun to argue for the need to shift from focusing on the formal structure of youth ministry and rather focus on the informal structures involved in youth ministry.  This project focuses on a study of the informal structures involved in the 2006 Youth Theology Initiative (YTI) Summer Academy.  The role of the informal structure of residential life during the 2006 YTI Summer Academy is explored and is shown to have made a significant transformative impact in the lives of the youth who participated in the program. If you are a youth pastor, this equipping certainly involves recruiting volunteer leaders.  The goal of this project was to train three youth pastors in recruiting volunteer youth leaders using a four-phase strategy involving prayer, effective leadership team, worship service vision casting, and personal contacting. Assessing the needs of children and adolescents has been a largely neglected area.  A Delphi panel developed elements to be included in a tool to screen 10-18 year olds' spiritual needs and resources.  A group of children and adolescents served as a case study of the tool's use. The techniques which were taught were drawn from various monastic traditions and Christian mystics from throughout the ages.  They were presented over the course of eight weeks of study.  In addition to learning various styles of contemplative prayer the participants were asked to employ them for at least 15 minutes a day, five days a week, for each of the eight weeks. The research focused on studying adolescent development, leadership, learning styles, and curricular design through analyzing four curricula currently in use with adolescents.  The research was evaluative in nature.  Data were collected through sixty-minute phone interviews and by developing an evaluative grid from literary research.  The grid provided a consistent process to analyze the curricula.  Leadership with adolescents is either strongly emphasized or ignored in the evangelical Christian church.  Teens are seen as a resource and should be placed in positions to make an impact today, according to the collected data.  A strong philosophical base of adolescent development theory, leadership theory, or learning styles theory did not exist in the models. All the approaches incorporated theoretical pieces within the areas of study. There was a lack of consideration for teen maturation needs when presenting the information.  Social support was not integrated into the fiber of the programs.
