The staff at New Horizons Ministries (NHM) intuitively understandd the complexity of the homeless runaway adolescent (HRA) life and the counterproductivity of street life. A systemic analysis of the complex problem of youths being unable to exit street life and an evaluation of the ministry of New Horizons will be used to confront the plethora of issues and strategies for service delivery that confront the ministry of NHM. NHM believes that HRA running from abusive environments face further abuse, exploitation, and isolation on the street. Serving these youths in a deeply relational context NHM follows the model of table fellowship to the marginalized illustrated in Luke's Gospel. NHM staff surround youths with concentric circles of support that empower and equip youths to live healthy, interdependent lifestyles. This philosophy of service is based in the missiological categories of the ministry of Jesus and modeled by the early church. Service, worship, community, and proclamation begin to relationally connect these youths with the Biblical definition of community and address the isolating issues involved in street activity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131445142487040,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:47:36.540Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:04:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"119dc28e-ee11-4d9a-b64e-2031e9060f6f","accessControl_ssim":["0b73f58f-6e16-4f6e-8626-ad72441e42a1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The rise and decline of Coming Together: a Christian youth leadership movement in Boston, 1989-1999"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:03:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:38:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["eb09171b-e1a3-4053-9cd2-f400444acbc6"],"hasLease_ssim":["d6acfeb1-402c-4f5d-a724-5a0ccdf19c7b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce Jackson"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"location_tesim":["Massachusetts--Boston"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Craig W McMullen"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","Coming Together (Organization)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work is a study focused on the ten year life cycle of the Coming Together: A Christian Youth Leadership Movement in Boston, 1989-1999, (C2). It is concerned with the question of what were the elements that brought about this youth revival and what caused its decline. Then with this information, and given the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what would it take for another city wide youth ministry to happen again? A primary premise of the work is a historic review using a systems thinking approach. Systems analysis provided a view of the interrelated elements of an otherwise complex setting between Modernity and Postmodernity, Urban and Suburban youth, Traditional Boston Churches and the Coming Together Youth led movement. Secondly, this study discusses the various models of congregational life cycles to tell the story in eight stages of the rise and decline of the C2 movement. The primary research project of this work was using the Hexagon technique for developing systems analysis of particular environments. Using this method, this study was able to determine the five principles of the C2. The five principles of Coming Together are: 1. C2 is a movement responding to the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit in youth. 2. C2 is a Christian Youth led movement. 3. C2 utilizes a team approach in sharing, of leadership, vision and resources. 4. C2 seeks to build and celebrate Christ-centered, interracial relationships among urban and suburban youth groups. 5. C2 seeks to provide a supportive network of adult youth leaders. This study then analyzed these principles through the grid of systems thinking and developed a causal loop diagram for further analysis. In this diagram it was discovered how the C2 was a system of reinforcing elements that once placed in motion would become productive. This analysis also demonstrated that the reinforcing aspect for the C2 system could become counter-productive if any change occurred in one of the principles. Next this study analyzed the current state of youth ministry in Boston, what has to happen to bring forth a city-wide youth ministry through systems analysis Hexagon project with current youth ministers in Boston. Through the development of another causal loop diagram of this question, the leverage points for effecting change in the current system of youth work in Boston was determined. This study proposes that the five principles of C2 could still be an effective leverage to bring about city-wide ministry. Although the form of this youth ministry would be different base upon a new generation of youth in a changing context. It was also suggested that these principles are transferable to other settings, although the programmatic outcomes would be different according to the environment. The final outcome of the life cycle study of C2 is found that out of the death of the movement came to the resurrection of a multiplication of new and vibrant youth programs. A key learning from C2 study is best summarized by the words of Jesus when he said, 'I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds,' (John 12:24)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129943077289984,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:44.059Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"36f668ec-5a29-4f43-b522-f0901a6c22e9","accessControl_ssim":["ab27f979-5cb7-4c2e-802d-b53f1905ec03"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["This is my church: the role of preaching in helping youth to discover the church as a legitimate partner in their faith journey"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:55:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:43:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5e51fed0-9e3d-461b-9b72-72f9265bbe97"],"hasLease_ssim":["d8919a72-040f-4192-a42a-6e5da6511216"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Donald M Steele"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Terry V Hastings"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with youth","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author's claim is that preaching is an effective means of engaging young people in their faith journey. The Bible is filled with charges and directions for a life full of meaning. Matthew 28:19-20 gives us a precise command, 'Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.' The charge of making disciples is clear and direct. The question comes about when determining how best to make disciples. Jesus used modeling and mentoring. The established example of Jesus mentoring is the one that will be discussed and followed. There is a great need in youth ministries for students to see how other students who are committed followers of Jesus Christ live their lives. The project leader believes a teenage student better relates to another teenage student than to an adult. A student mentor can grow personally by being trained to mentor, as well as become prepared to minister to their mentoree. This project will develop a curriculum for teenage leaders to lead younger students to understand how they can have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. The project leader will work with the mentor development team to develop six sessions that will be used by student mentors to lead a younger teenage mentoree. The mentor will spend one on one time with a student who is two or more years younger than the mentor. The mentoree will be trained to understand how to have a closer relationship with Jesus, as well as be encouraged to become a mentor to a younger student.
