A new liturgical season, with elements of worship, music, art, education and special events, was instituted from Feast Day of St. Francis (October 4) until Advent with the theme of God's inclusive care for all. Creation season provides a sense of how ecology can serve as a guiding motif and broad context for dealing with postmodern issues. This was facilitated through a five-week small group experience in which adults studied Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.  They then applied themes from those sermons to their life stories, and shared them in the group. Preparing to preach within the context of numerous other pastoral duties can make it difficult to see past the coming Sunday.  At times, this limited vision may create a feeling that Sunday sermons have little connection from week to week.  This project is designed to bring cohesiveness to the preaching task. By creating a sense of direction and purpose over a year's time, preaching can be seen not as a series of isolated events but integral parts of an overall plan. Examination of the Christian year and lectionary and the impact these interdependent entities have on preaching provide a framework for the preaching planning guide.  Chapters 1 and 2 respectively look at the history, development and current status of the Christian year and lectionaries. In chapter 3, the limits and benefits of allowing the Christian year and lectionary to drive preaching are presented and evaluated.  A six-step planning guide is the basis of chapter 4. Meaningful, well thought-out liturgical events are extremely effective in developing Christian identity, an identity that can prevail against the other words and other stories that would coopt and destroy the unique identity of the church. Another chapter discusses finding meaning in the celebration of the Christian year. The act of ministry and appendices include worship services and sermons based on Cycle A of the lectionary from Lent through Ascension. The method of research was qualitative in that the writer was a participant observer using Whitehead's model of theological reflection.
