On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study.  Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring. A psychometric tool, the 'Anger Self Report', was adminstered to a population of Texas Panhandle Southern Baptist clergy.  Areas explored included awareness of anger, general expresison of anger, physical expression of anger, verbalization of guilt and anger, condemnation of anger, and mistrust. The author advanced the thesis that all pastoral relationships must begin with God, progress to the family, and ultimately to others.  He presented the thesis during eight days of training, utilizing evaluation instruments, Bible messages, discussion groups, and assigned reading.  He reinforced the project with a three-month program of planned family interaction, reading, and peer group meetings.  Most participants indicated considerable improvement in relationships with God.  Over fifty percent indicated improved family relationships. Twenty-two key issues were identified by survey and used to design a program for ministry reflection groups meeting every three weeks. Three pilot groups (1982) and four test groups (1983) used the material.  Transition by the test ministers was compared with that of four contemporaries.  Further experiment with the program as part of an integrated approach to transition during the first three years after ordination is recommended. It explores pastors' experiences with and their denial of loneliness.  The study explores both the necessity and the possibility of embracing loneliness within pastoral ministry.  The disclosive sample of five married, parish-based Lutheran clergy, basically through interviews and a nine-month long group seminar, expresses and engages experiences of loneliness in pastoral ministry.  It is discovered that loneliness is a real experience in pastoral ministry, often experienced and perceived in negative terms. Two instruments were used in a retreat setting.  The instruments determined styles of leadership, defined ministry, discussed who performs the ministry, and to whom. The results provided opportunity for evaluation and setting of goals.  The most effective and dynamic churches were those that shared responsibility and power between clergy and laity.  All other factors, as important as they seemed at the beginning of the study, proved insignificant when the power issue was
