ABE seeks to influence all levels of the ABCUSA through the renewal of churches in the denomination. The thesis asks how pastors that serve churches affiliated with ABE reflect the values of the renewal movement.  This thesis tells of the beginnings of ABE and its role as an evangelical renewal group in the ABCUSA.  It continues with the theological and biblical grounds for renewal and the need for renewal among American Baptists today.  The thesis looks at the need for renewal in mainline denominations of America and other evangelical renewal groups that seek to influence their denominations.  This thesis includes field research that asked pastors how they reflected the values of the renewal movement. Interviews were also conducted to inquire about renewal themes in the local church and in the ABC.  Recommendations are made to support ABE's efforts to work with the pastors of affiliate churches.  The future of the ABC will be determined by its ability to effectively respond to the workings of God's Spirit. Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. Parish ministers leave pastorates (and even the ministry) due to burnout, its symptoms, and other factors. High pastoral turnover rates are counterproductive to local church effectiveness. This qualitative study used a researcher-designed, semi-structured interview to gather data from thirty United States Nazarene pastors to comment on a presumed positive connection between sabbaticals, reduced burnout symptoms, and increased tenure The study finds that Nazarene pastor sabbaticals have a positive reactive and preventative impact on ministry tenure and the pastor's ability to manage burnout symptoms. Sabbaticals typically lengthen local parish tenure but occasionally help pastors prepare spiritually for a new ministry assignment. The research method employed was a qualitative examination that primarily utilized the focus group method.  The author identified four summary lessons from the research.  There is a considerable need among Southern Baptist churches in Illinois for clergy evaluation processes.  There are successful feedback models that look very different.  A lay-involved process is stronger because it engages the opinions of laity and encourages teamwork. They desire a friendly, faith filled community that has an affirming and welcoming pastoral staff. The project methodology uses exploratory questions for the self-administered questionnaire, focus groups and personal interviews. The data analysis of the variables resulted in the following conclusions: 96% of the returnees actively search for a parish; they want a pastor who preaches and prays well; they want to be involved in ministry both within and beyond the parish. The author chose four case studies of pastors and churches in the Presbyterian Church USA who are the 'Joshua' following the 'Moses' of their churches. The long pastorates range from twenty-one to forty- five years. The churches are thriving in increases of worship attendance, membership, budget and staff.
