It is the assumption of this study that this development is a problem for the Church of the Brethren, now and in the future, and that it does require attention.Among those caught in the middle of this development are pastors who must declare the position and interpret it. In their office as pastor they must deal directly with the implications of a position that one Brethren writer has characterized as \"rhetorical‚\" in nature (Bach 180). The author of the present study, a pastor, has struggled with those implications and his struggles prompted this project. The aim of this study was to gather information from Church of the Brethren pastors about their experiences as they represent the peace position in their congregations. It was felt that this would be a fruitful window through which to examine the state of the peace position in the Church of the Brethren today.A questionnaire was designed and administered to a random sampling of Brethren pastors active today to solicit that information. Analysis of the findings revealed that most Church of the Brethren congregations are not presently experiencing significant conflict over the issue, but a majority of pastors are uncomfortable with the current status quo in the Church in regard to it. Six concrete recommendations for changing peace demographics in the Church of the Brethren emerged from the data."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"identifier_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/dissertations-theses/what-pastors-experience-their-congregations-as/docview/305101089/se-2"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873232668327936,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:52:19.235Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:48:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:05:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a64be501-4f59-4f61-b588-3c6f23ee9710","accessControl_ssim":["0d73467e-c970-4487-862f-deb0abda6715"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Maximizing ministry potential by balancing pastoral leadership with lay ministry ownership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:48:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:57:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2ec642e1-2888-486a-b890-027177be9b67"],"hasLease_ssim":["982cffbe-b0e2-4f7a-97e1-e707140bc631"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard R Melick"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert D Gallina"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Commitment to the church","Clergy","Green Hills Baptist Church (La Habra, Calif)","Laity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was designed to maximize ministry potential at Green Hills Baptist Church by balancing pastoral leadership with lay ministry ownership. Results: comments of the responding pastors indicate that, when representatives of the faith community listen and respond to suicidal teens and their families, there is a positive impact made in the healing process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720989539434496,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:14:44.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:18:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:47:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"540017d8-c960-458c-a080-2e1ad21ecbf5","accessControl_ssim":["5a56cdfd-0556-42e1-8537-6f5d209ad3a2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["I never believed in the devil until I became a parish minister: the design and implementation of long term healing responses to United Methodist pastors in parish ministry experiencing stress and burnout"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:18:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:35:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bc3dc33b-89a7-477c-be80-a859bc74ceec"],"hasLease_ssim":["d958f590-75c6-41c9-bf6d-e8101f399529"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael S Koppel"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author researched clergy stress in one District of the Virginia Annual Conference through an ethnographic study. The author presents Sabbath rest as the theological foundation for a response to clergy stress and burnout. The long term healing responses to stress and burnout presented are preventive care, a retreat based Sabbath rest mininstry, and clergy spiritual support groups. The study concludes with a prophetic call for the development of the Clergy Care Institute at Wesley Theological Seminary."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715511540383744,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:47:40.193Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:13:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"05bbf294-2633-406a-b6b4-162384428605","accessControl_ssim":["b59fdba8-e50c-454f-a17d-6bf1dbc95cb6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching in a addictive culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:12:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:17:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8ffbdde2-769d-44af-bcdd-706112b0197d"],"hasLease_ssim":["a20e321f-37c5-4a9e-a105-d3701ed66e30"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Bouchard"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael A Becker"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Laity","Alcoholics Anonymous","Church work with addicts","Self-disclosure"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Pastoral preaching in an addictive culture can be therapeutic when it is informed by the theology and method of the 12 step program pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. Such preaching involves a measure of self-disclosure, providing identification between preacher and hearer. The author did qualitative research with men and women in recovery who were participating in Serenity Retreats, and who affirmed the need for a preacher's self-disclosure and awareness of recovery motifs. It begins with a study of the lives of Moses and Paul, and then reviews select, current leadership literature. This project interviewed 14 Assemblies of God leaders, and found that a pre-adolescent experience of faith in Christ and a stable home life were foundational in their lives.
