The analysis of institutional codependency on the relationship between a pastor and his church is the major focus of this project. This thesis challenges that assumption by examining the valuable role that church leaders can, and should, play in the development process of effective expository sermons. After demonstrating from scripture the vested interest church leaders should have in the sermon, the thesis will look at indirect and direct ways church leaders can assist in the sermon development process. While the STEP program (Study Training for Effective Pastoral Ministry) through Eastern Mennonite University is helpful to acquaint bivocational pastors, there is a need for additional training for preaching that fits into the busy STEP bivocational pastor's schedule. The model is designed to engage church in society in ways which create a more effective church. Through qualitative research and considering the ministries of two illustrious, great African-American preachers, the dissertation demonstrates that congregational involvement in society increases church effectiveness, regardless of whether the style of ministry is priestly, as with Dr. J.H. Jackson, or prophetic, as was that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The creation of an effective church in its fullness is, of course, a long-term assessment. A review of pastoral care and homiletical literature was conducted; twenty experienced United Methodist elders were interviewed; and four sermons were submitted that had been preached on a Sunday immediately following a preacher's difficult life event. After analysis, it was discovered that preachers relate to the topics they preach about. This desire to encourage first-time pastors is the heart of this dissertation's work. The dissertation is an attempt to provide assistance to first-time pastors in order to possibly prevent what happened to the writer from happening to them. First-time pastors encounter ministry challenges. these ministerial challenges can be overcome through encouragement received in relationships with seasoned mentors such as directors of missions. The ministerial staff and congregation participated in this project by completing a 360 degree survey of the participants. The project director presented the results to the ministerial staff in coaching sessions. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul. Both males and females have contributed to that rich tradition; however, there has been an unjust trend in which women preachers are relegated to small churches and/or dysfunctional churches. A dialectic tension has erupted between the women preachers in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the cost they have paid to fulfill God's calling. Because of this phenomenon, their preaching voice has been under-developed and in need of nurturing.
