The Bible uses many different motivations to move Christians towards obedience, such as the promise of rewards and the threat of consequences. Some of these motives do not seem 'Christ-centered' to some at first glance and thus are often neglected by so called 'Christ-centered' preachers. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with five pastors in the Reformed Church in America. The review of literature and analysis of the five interviews focused on three key areas of motivations in preaching. The purpose of this study was to explore how preachers use evaluation for understanding how pastoral relationships influence preaching. The study followed a qualitative research method, utilizing semi-structured interviews with six pastors, analyzed in a constant comparative method. The research explored perceptions of the pastoral relationship, evaluation, emotional intelligence, and ongoing sermon preparation. The trust or distrust between a pastor and the church often begins within the first six months of an appointment as they learn to dance with one another. Psalm 133, 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 and Philippians 1:27-2:18 all give a clear message about the importance of trust that builds unity within a faith community. Pastors in two districts of the United Methodist Church were surveyed with follow-up interviews regarding their perceptions and practices around duties listed under 'order' in The United Methodist Book of Discipline. Comparisons and contrasts in thinking are identified between ordained and non-ordained clergy. This project critically assesses the effectiveness of the current process of preparing both congregations and pastors for cross-cultural/cross-racial appointments in Iowa. The program was offered in three-week retreats focusing on spiritual formation, discipleship and stewardship, and church administration. Pre and post-tests of the three sessions assessed the increase in knowledge and effectiveness of leadership. While we rejoice for this open door and the opportunity for the gospel, we also see the challenges in establishing the new believers in the biblical faith as wll as the development of leaders for the emerging churches. The challenge of developing leaders becomes more complex as many of them are oral learners. One of the ways to face the challenge is to use oral methods in training leaders. This thesis describs the opportunities and challenges in Bihar, India. It surveys mission history, particularly focused on the Bihar Reach-Out Network. It builds a biblical and theological foundation for consideration of orality.
