Previously, EPs were informed about their roles through networking. Though deployed in churches for over 20 years, many EPs forged their own job-descriptions and not all EPs share the same titles or tasks. The essence of the role is lifting the administrative burden from the senior pastor (SP). Recent studies have explored the value of utilizing EPs to implement the church's vision, as well as the competencies needed to do so. Though some EPs recognize a transitory dimension to their role there are common principles and experiences for most EPs. This study looks into contextual and relational factors affecting the senior pastor/executive pastor team paradigm. EP focus groups and SP phone interviews were utilized as supplemental explorations of themes revealed during initial interaction with knowledgeable informants. The reasons for the creation of the EP position in the participating churches was explored, as well as current staffing arrangements and dynamics. Of particular importance was the creation and maintenance of the primary relationship, that between the EP and the SP. Common practices and attitudes must be in place to make an SPEP team successful and thus beneficial to the church. To understand these factors, helpful principles, stories, proverbs, and analogies were discussed. The qualitative study of six United Methodist churches affected by the divorce of their pastors, this study addresses the minimally researched phenomenon of how clergy divorce affects a local church and the factors that influence a local church in its recovery. The author discovered that a local churches recovery is influenced by various relationships that exist between the pastor and the local church. The author explores this conclusion with a preaching project that used input from members to help him prepare sermons anchored by stories and images. Group interviews following these sermons explored whether hearers reflected more deeply on the sermon and its implications for behavior. Based upon the premise that the life of a congregation flows from the center point of worship, this thesis examines what impact an inclusive model for worship, including preaching, has on a congregation with a desire to be more totally inclusive. Although traditional diversity, such as multiculturalism, is a part of this inclusivity, it goes beyond that definition to encompass as many voices of congregants as possible. the impact of the basic premise is examined in light of the project experience, as well as supporting theologies, and homiletic trends. The content addressed issues of administration/management, leadership, and relationship using four dimensions: retreat, mentor, small group, and supervision. The participants were the 2000 class of probationary members of the Florida Conference UMC. The results indicate the need for training in administrative and relationship skills.
